Programming Note

Posted in General on November 30, 2009 by fieldingmellish

So, now that we’re moving into December, you can expect a post a day! For a limited time only, I’ll be publishing one whole post, either here at Moonside or over at Fourside, every single day! New sketch primers? Maybe! Snarky Glenn Beck posts? Why not? Boring analysis of the health care debate in the Senate? Damn right! And tonight, come on back at 8:30, as I liveblog the Pats-Saints game!

We hope you join us for a glorious hour of witness!

In Defense of Family Guy, Part 2 of Surely Thousands

Posted in Comedy, General with tags , on October 22, 2009 by fieldingmellish

Well, the title isn’t quite accurate. It’s more a defense of Seth MacFarlane. As you may have heard, Cleveland, the slow-talking Black member of the Family Guy cast got his own spin-off. And I’ll be honest, I thought I was going to hate it. I didn’t really like Cleveland all that much to begin with, and it seemed like Seth MacFarlane was looking to make a few extra bucks to add to his surely Scrooge McDuck-like collection of money. I thought it was going to be a cash-in. Then I watched it, and you know what? I liked it. No, it wasn’t Family Guy. But it wasn’t American Dad either. Continue reading

The Lost Levels

I should hate the Wii Virtual Console. Considering how I feel about copyright and whatnot, the Wii Virtual Console seems like it would stand for everything I hate. Paying twice for something you already own, draconian sharing abilities, etc. They continue to stubbornly refuse to make several grand instantly by releasing Earthbound. And yet, I continue to buy from it. I own Mario, Mario 2, Mario 3, and Paper Mario. Mario Kart 64. Punch Out and Super Punch Out. A Link to the Past. Blades of Steel. Except for Paper Mario, I own all of these already. My parents probably paid $60 a pop for them back in those heady days of the early 1990s. So why the hell have I spent another $56 to buy them again?* Continue reading

The Greatest Day in Deadspin History

Posted in General with tags , on September 16, 2009 by fieldingmellish

I’m sure you already knew this, but Fire Joe Morgan reunited for one glorious day at Deadspin. Check out the posts here.

Reading them all and laughing at every Derek Jeter crack made me realize how much I missed FJM. They were, and I honestly mean this, the funniest site on the internet. They left a gap that no website could possibly fill. None have even come close. It’s my dream that they’ll all give up being well paid TV writers and go back to blogging full time. I will personally pay them $10 a month. Who else is in?

Morality Plays

Posted in General, Sports with tags on August 14, 2009 by fieldingmellish

Well, I was all geared up to write a post explaining why I don’t care about steroids in Baseball, and Joe Posnanski went a wrote an awesome post not just about steroids, but America, hypocrisy, Rick Pitino, Viagra, and everything else. It’s way better than anything I would have written, so go read it.

The new Melrose Place: “Tuesday is the New Hump Day.”

Uh, gross? I know they wanted that cute turn of phrase, but is anyone excited by the promise of” humping”? There are a lot of ugly words humans have used to mean intercourse, but “hump” may be the worst. That’s what people use to describe what dogs do to each other. Can you imagine a paperback romance novel, one with the blond guy with windblown hair and some manner of fair maiden on the cover, with the word “hump” somewhere in the description? “In the war-torn nation of Hambledreck, the Queen has one chance: to enlist roguish hero Slad Brickgranite to fight for the cause. And they will hump.” I am bemused by this ad campaign.

Which is why the new Melrose Place will run 15 years.

What’s on Tap

Well, I seem to have lurched into the old FireJoeMorgan posting cycle. Apologies all around. Someone needed to take up the irregular posting slack in their absence.

In any case, I plan on doing another Sketch Primer soon. I also have a few sports posts in the pipeline. Unfortunately, I have a lot going on offline, so that means I won’t be able to resume regular posting for a little while. Soon enough,  though.
